Android, which was launched in 2008, is recognized as an open-source mobile operating system. Currently, the version of Android used by most mobile devices is provided by Google and includes proprietary software from the company. In April 2015, legal action was initiated by the European Commission against Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, following complaints about its business practices. As a result, a fine was imposed on Google by the Commission in July 2018 for abusing its dominant market position. The objective of this post is to analyze the main economic issue presented by the decision of the Commission.
