1 The Digital Markets Act (DMA) was officially enacted on November 1, 2022, with its provisions taking effect on May 2, 2023. The DMA's primary goal is to enhance consumer choice and empower individuals in managing their personal information. Enforcement efforts will focus on identifying companies that qualify as "gatekeepers," which include major platforms like search engines, social networks, and app stores. Platforms that meet specific revenue and user criteria may be classified as gatekeepers. On September 6, 2023, the Commission designated Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, ByteDance, Meta, and Microsoft as gatekeepers.
